Silvia’s Story
As one of eight children, I am the only sibling born in the U.S. after my parents’ emigration from Colombia in early 1974. After high school graduation, I began working at LP Evans Mercedes in the service department. It was there that I met Ray Applebaum, my future employer and guide into the asphalt business. I began working for Ray’s company, Driveway Maintenance, in March of 1994. I started as a production assistant, scheduling work, ordering supplies, and handling customer communications. I quickly began to take over more and more superintendent responsibilities, until I ultimately became the full time superintendent for Driveway Maintenance’s South Florida operations.
Sixteen years later, I became the company Operations Manager and, under Ray’s tutelage, began learning the intricacies of running a company from the inside out. In 2020, after guiding the company through the trials and hardships of COVID, I purchased Driveway Maintenance and took over as President and CEO. I remain thankful to this day for having such consistent leadership in my corner through all these years, and am committed to continuing the legacy of success Driveway Maintenance, now DMI Paving & Sealcoating, has sustained for over five decades.

Our Story
1956
Founded
Driveway Maintenance Inc. is founded by L.M. “Sonny” Knuckle as a residential driveway company, laying the foundation for what would become a multi-state commercial leader.
1975
Shift to Commercial Work
Ray Applebaum merges his company, All Dade Driveway Maintenance, into DMI and transitions the business fully into commercial pavement services, moving away from residential work entirely.
1994
Silvia Brown Joins DMI
At just 19 years old, Silvia Brown joins the company and quickly rises through the ranks, becoming instrumental in operational growth and expansion across multiple markets.
1995
Industry Recognition
After a national review, Pavement Maintenance Magazine names DMI the largest sealcoating contractor in the Southeast United States, cementing the company’s leadership position in the industry.
Late 1990s–2000s
Multi-State Expansion
DMI expands operations across Florida, Texas, Arizona, Georgia, and Washington, D.C., with offices in major markets including Tampa, Orlando, Dallas, Phoenix, Atlanta, and West Palm Beach.
2016
Leadership Transition Begins
Ray Applebaum begins transitioning leadership to Silvia Brown, preparing her to lead the company into its next chapter.
2020
A New Era
Silvia Brown officially becomes President and CEO, establishing DMI as a woman- and minority-owned business. The company continues to expand its services to include paving, in addition to sealcoating, striping, and patching.
2020-Present
Recognition & Community Impact
